Newmarket (Rowley Mile & July Course) is one of the most important venues in British racing. Below: the things every punter should know before backing a runner here, plus our latest verified selections at the track.
On the Rowley Mile straight course, stands’ side is typically favoured in big-field sprints. On the July Course it’s less pronounced. Over a mile and longer the draw matters far less.
Good to firm is the typical surface. The Heath drains well so the track can ride faster than the official going suggests. Long-striding, galloping types are suited.
The local yards — Charlie Appleby, John & Thady Gosden, William Haggas, Roger Varian — hold a natural advantage with Newmarket’s sand-based gallops as their daily training surface. Course form on debut is uncommon for outsiders.
The Dip on the Rowley Mile can unbalance inexperienced or unfit horses. The rising finish rewards strong stayers and punishes any with stamina doubts. The July Course is slightly easier and faster ground than Rowley.
