NAPDistant Rumble
Salisbury · 3:18 · Remembering Jane Samuels Handicap 6f
Distant Rumble arrives here on the back of two encouraging efforts that paint a coherent picture of a horse finding his feet in handicap company. Most recently, at Windsor on 23 May over 6f 12y on Good to Firm ground, he broke his duck at Class 6 level, returning to winning ways at the same 7/2 that is advised today. The ride description tells the story neatly: "slowly away, mid-division, headway over 2f out, driven over 1f out, led inside final furlong, ran on." Before that, on 14 May at this very course, he finished second in a Class 5 handicap over the same 6f trip, keeping on after being ridden from two furlongs out. Two places from two starts in May represents a significant upturn after a flat winter campaign on the all-weather.
The conditions today ask one honest question: the ground. Both encouraging recent runs came on Good to Firm or Good, and today's Soft going at Salisbury is notably different. He has not demonstrated any form on soft ground in the records available, so the surface is a genuine unknown rather than a confirmed strength. That said, the course and distance are proven, and a return to Salisbury, where he was second just 26 days ago, is a straightforward switch rather than a leap into the unknown.
Drawing stall three in an eleven-runner field is workable, and Oisin Murphy's appointment is a significant positive given the horse's tendency to race mid-division and require a considered ride. The market suggests the layers share this enthusiasm, with Betfair Sportsbook, Paddy Power and Sky Bet all trading him at 9/4, which means the advised 7/2 represents a meaningful overlay against the general. Arantes Nascimento at 4/1 rates as the most credible rival on a higher official rating of 74, while Invincible Speed at 9/2 from the wide draw warrants respect.
At 7/2 against a general 9/4, the gap between advised price and market price is the compelling argument here. The Soft ground remains the one caveat worth acknowledging, but proven course form, a career-best run 17 days ago, and a significant price advantage combine to make Distant Rumble a well-supported selection in the Remembering Jane Samuels Handicap.
