Mount Ruapehu
Why we tipped Mount Ruapehu
Mount Ruapehu is on a serious run — three wins from his last six runs on the all-weather, all in the 5f-6f range. Tuesday at Southwell over 6f he was sent off 11/4 and won "readily", chasing leaders before being shaken up to lead over a furlong out and powering away. The two earlier Southwell wins (March 21 and March 14) were similarly emphatic — strong finishing efforts both, the horse "ridden out and kept on" then "kept on well" inside the final furlong. He's only 5 days off Tuesday's win so the fitness is sharp and he's still rated 60. The honest questions: today is a turf venue (his recent runs are all Standard going at AW tracks), and the trip drops back to 5f 7y — sharper than his winning 6f range, and his one 5f run this year was a 4th at Newcastle in February where he "kept on at same pace". Hamilton's 5f is uphill though, and a horse that finishes as strongly as this one does has the right shape for a stiff sprint. Drawn 4 of 13. Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair Sportsbook all show 9/4 — fair value rather than a standout edge, but the form lines justify the confidence.
