Why we tipped Study Of Words

First-time cheek pieces here. Charlie Appleby's three-year-old won this same course and distance last October — sent off 1/7 in a 4-runner Newmarket maiden, he tracked the leader, led over 2f out, was clear over 1f out and won "very easily". The blip on the page is a creditable second at Goodwood over the same trip on soft ground in September, where he challenged inside the final furlong and was just outstayed. He's been off 193 days, and the application of cheek pieces for the first time is the obvious aid Appleby has chosen for the comeback. The 1m 2f he won so easily over is back today, the Good to Firm ground will suit (he won on Good last time and was less effective on soft both runs before that), and from stall 1 in this 5-runner Class 3 with W Buick aboard, the tactical position is in his favour. Main danger looks Sahara King (4/1, drawn 4); Crockham Heath at 9/2, Gatehouse at 6/1 and Evanesco at 8/1 complete the field. The 11/10 is fair given the question marks (193-day break, first-time headgear) but the connections, course form and ground all line up — the textbook Banker profile.
