Each-way place terms
How many places are paid, and at what fraction of the odds, under standard UK and Irish each-way terms. Enter the number of runners and the type of race.

Terms are set by the number of runners when the race starts, not when you bet, so a non-runner can change them. If a field drops from eight to seven, the third place is no longer paid.

Questions
How many places are paid in a handicap with 16 runners?
Four places, at a quarter of the odds.
What are the each-way terms with 8 runners?
Three places at a fifth of the odds, whether it's a handicap or not.
Why is there no each-way betting with four runners?
With four or fewer runners, only the winner is paid, so standard terms are win only.
What are extra places?
Many bookmakers pay more places than standard on big races as a promotion, such as five or six places in a big handicap. The fraction usually stays the same. Check the terms when you bet.
