Worked example

You back a horse at 5/1 for £10 to win, and a 2/1 shot is withdrawn. The deduction is 30p in the pound. Without Rule 4 your bet would return £60.00. With it, your £50 winnings are cut by 30% to £35.00, so it returns £45.00.

How we use this at The Gallop

Every tip we've given since October 2025 is on our results page, settled with exactly these sums: each-way bets at standard place terms, Rule 4 where it applied, and the bigger of the advised price and the starting price, as bookmakers offering best odds guaranteed would pay. You can check any bet by putting it through the calculator.

Questions

What is a Rule 4 deduction?

When a horse is withdrawn from a race after you've taken a price, the race is easier to win, so bookmakers reduce the winnings on bets struck before the withdrawal. The deduction depends on the withdrawn horse's price and is set by the Tattersalls Rule 4(c) table.

Does Rule 4 come off my stake?

No. It comes off your winnings only. Your stake is returned in full if your bet wins.

What if more than one horse is withdrawn?

The deductions are added together, up to a maximum of 75p in the pound. For example, withdrawals at evens (45p) and 6/4 (40p) would add up to 85p, so the deduction is capped at 75p.

Does Rule 4 apply to each-way bets?

Yes. The deduction applies to the winnings on both the win part and the place part.

What about a horse priced bigger than 14/1?

There's no deduction. A withdrawn horse has to be 14/1 or shorter for Rule 4 to apply.
