How accumulator odds work

An accumulator multiplies the odds of every selection, so the return from each winner becomes the stake on the next. In decimal odds, which include the stake, you just multiply them together.

Worked example

A £5 fourfold at 2/1, 6/4, evens and 5/2 is 3 × 2.5 × 2 × 3.5 = 52.5, so it returns £262.50: a profit of £257.50 on a £5 stake. If any one of them loses, the whole bet loses.

Each-way accumulators

A £5 each-way fourfold is two bets and costs £10: a £5 win acca and a £5 place acca. With 1/5 place terms on every leg, if all four win it returns £278.88. If all four only place, the win acca loses but the place acca returns £16.38, a profit of £6.38.

How the odds grow

A £1 accumulator with every selection at evens, and the chance of it winning if each selection really is an even-money shot. The odds grow quickly, but so does the chance of one leg letting you down.

Questions

What is an accumulator?

One bet linking several selections in different races. Every selection has to win; the return from each leg rolls on to the next, so the odds multiply. Two selections is a double, three a treble, and four or more an accumulator, or acca.

How do I work out accumulator odds?

Multiply the decimal odds of every selection together. 2/1 (3.0), 6/4 (2.5), evens (2.0) and 5/2 (3.5) multiply to 52.5, so a £5 fourfold returns £262.50.

How does an each-way accumulator work?

It's two accumulators: a win acca at full odds and a place acca at the place fraction of each selection's odds. If every selection places, the place acca pays even if none of them wins.

How are non-runners settled?

A non-runner's leg counts at odds of 1.0, so your stake carries on to the other selections: a treble with a non-runner becomes a double, and so on. Choose Non-runner as the result for that selection to see the effect.

Is an accumulator or a Lucky 15 better?

An accumulator loses if any selection loses. A Lucky 15 covers the same four selections with 15 bets, so it costs more but pays with fewer winners. Neither is better in itself: it depends how confident you are in every selection.
